William A. Weis

Cullum No. 23600-1961 | March 2, 2020 | Died in San Antonio, TX
To be interred at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX at a later date.

William Alan “Bill” Weis came to West Point from New York. He was born on June 29, 1939 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. His father was William Christian Weis, and his mother was Helen Elizabeth Burton. The family members were residents of Rochester back in the 19th century, and possibly beyond that period. In 1957, Bill graduated from Marshall High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He also achieved Eagle Scout at age 16. He was fortunate to receive an appointment to West Point from Representative H.C. Ostertag of New York’s 39th District.

Bill Weis arrived at West Point to join the Corps of Cadets in July 1957. He came with blond hair, blue eyes, and a knack for science and love for the outdoors. With a motto of “No Sweat,” he was easy going, a good athlete, and a good student. Bill liked camping, leave, good times, and “pro drags.” He was a member of Company E-2. His classmate Mike Eggleston recalled that he was a great leader who had a love of classical music. He maintained discipline of his plebes and had a rapport with them. The E-2 Company logo in Latin was Ex Faclictas, Ex Viner; in English that’s “Easy Come, Easy Go.” That summarized a laid-back attitude prevalent at that time. E-2’s location also gave the company an advantage: It was in the Lost Fifties, the most remote cadet barracks at West Point. The concern at that time was not about Vietnam, which was too far in the future from the company’s viewpoint. The threat that E-2 companymates could see immediately was war with the USSR in Europe. Their immediate future in the Armed Forces was their concern. While at West Point Bill participated in the German Club, Outdoor Sports Club, Chess Club, Handball Club, and Ski Club. He graduated in the top third of his class. With his ability, he would go far in the service.

After graduation from West Point in 1961, Bill married Linda L. Parmele on May 12, 1962 in East Bloomfield, NY. The marriage produced three children. They were divorced on December 15, 1983 in San Antonio, TX.

When Bill graduated, he was commissioned in the Artillery and was assigned to the 27th Artillery Regiment. He also attended the Naval Post Graduate School before he resigned from the Army in 1975 as a major. His military awards included the National Defense Service Medal.

After leaving active duty in the Army, Bill had a successful career with the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio. Founded in 1947, SwRI provides contract research and development services to government and industrial clients. SwRI’s major divisions include applied physics, applied power, intelligent systems, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, defense and intelligence, and space science. Bill worked as a nuclear engineer doing the startup plans for nuclear plants until they went online. Later he spent many years doing taxes for the American Association of Retired Persons.

Bill’s second marriage of 36 years was to Carolyn B. Jordan. They married on March 9, 1984 in San Antonio.

Bill and Carolyn enjoyed traveling, both domestic and foreign. He was fond of saying that they had set foot on all seven continents.

Bill died unexpectedly in his sleep on March 2, 2020 in San Antonio. He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughter, Laura Ihonvbere and her husband, Daniel; son William and his wife, Carol; son David and his wife, Ruth; stepdaughter, Debra Chernosky and her husband, Marvin (deceased); stepson, Doug Jordan and his wife, Linda; and nine grandchildren: Alexander and Chloe Ihonvbere, Daniel, Aaron and Jesse Weis, Matthew Chernosky, Kate Barclay, Hunter and Haley Jordan. Bill is also survived by his brother, Terence Weis.

Bill is fondly remembered by all who knew him. Well Done, Bill; Be Thou at Peace.
