Nicholson '61 Elected Vice-Chair of West Point Board of Visitors

Jim Nicholson has been elected Vice-Chair of the Board of Visitors of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Nicholson was initially appointed to the Board of Visitors by President Donald Trump in June 2018.

Nicholson, himself a Distinguished Graduate of West Point, and a retired Army colonel, is senior counsel at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck. He serves as chairman of the Daniels Fund, and was U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, and Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

It is with great regret and sorrow that we must notify you of the death of our Classmate and Class Vice-President, Bruce Shroyer, on April 18, 2019, in Manhasset, NY, after being hospitalized for treatment for pneumonia that was complicated by diabetes and the residual effects of a stroke he suffered in June 2018.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Pat; son, Kenneth and his wife Doreen; daughter, Kimberly Day and her husband Michael; and grandchildren, Christopher Shroyer, Michaela Day, and Mackenzie Day.

Visitation will be on Thursday, April 25, 2019, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Fairchild Funeral Chapel, 1570 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset, NY 11030.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 26, 2019, at 10:30 am at St. Peter of Alcantara Church, 1327 Port Washington Boulevard, Port Washington, NY 11050.

Interment will be on Friday, April 26, 2019 at 12:15 pm at Holy Rood Cemetery, 111 Old Country Road, Westbury, NY 11590.

'61 Golfing Grads 2019 at the World Golf Village, St. Augustine, FL

In April, 32 members of our class including sons, wives and in one case grandson participated in the 35th Golfing Grads of USMA at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, FL. We were joined by Phil Sykes daughter, Stephanie Campbell USMA 88 and husband Dave. As the senior class we managed to finish fourth among 12 classes. However, we were first in camaraderie and fun. The first day’s golf was played in a driving rain storm, but our class finished all 18 holes proving that old Rangers do lead the way. We look forward to next year’s outing.

R. James “Jim” Nicholson ’61 has been appointed by President Trump to the West Point Board of Visitors (BOV). The mission of the BOV is to inquire and advise the President as to the morale, discipline, academic standing, and general state of excellence of USMA and the Corps of Cadets. Nicholson, himself a Distinguished Graduate of West Point and a retired Army colonel, said, “Going to West Point and serving in the Army changed my life. I am very grateful to play a role in the development of our future generations of military leaders by serving on the Board of Visitors of my beloved Alma Mater.”

"Red Dog" Alan Armstrong Writes Novel About Last Days in Cambodia

This novel is based on fact. It is told by an actively involved participant who has never been able to get the tragedy inflicted on the Cambodian people far from his mind. It is fast-moving and hard-hitting. It is a very good read that challenges the reader to confront the past and contemplate the future.

West Point’s first 6^th generation graduate, French speaking Alan Armstrong, was one of three members of America’s armed forces to serve the longest in the Khmer Republic. When he wasn’t on battlefields with doomed soldiers, or meeting with his friend, Brigadier General Lon Non, brother of Cambodia’s president, Marshal Lon Nol, he was either at the Khmer high command’s Centre opérationnel or at the American Embassy, watching the country disintegrate.

Alan and two others were the last staff members to exit the American Embassy on the day that the United State pulled out of Cambodia. He flew out on the last evacuee helicopter shoulder to shoulder with the American Ambassador, John Gunther Dean.

The purpose of this initial survey is to begin the process for collecting your preferences for the 60th Reunion. We need to know now whether you plan to attend.

Based on the surveys and feedback for the 55th we are sure about many of your preferences. Returning to West Point versus some other city was the clear preference and Graduation Week was the preferred time to come to West Point for the reunion. So we will plan on those.

Dick Clarke's Son Confirmed for Fourth Star and Comdr USSOCOM

LTG Richard Clarke, the son of our classmate, Dick, and his wife, Gail, has been confirmed by the senate for a fourth star and assignment as commander of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) based in Tampa, Florida. His promotion is scheduled for sometime in March and the change of command is scheduled in late March.

LTG Clarke graduated from West Point in 1984 and entered the Army as an infantry officer. His first assignment was as a rifle platoon leader with the 1st Battalion, 48th Infantry, 3rd Armored Division. He commanded the 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He would later command the 82nd Airborne Division. His other unit assignments include time with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, and as Commandant, USMA. In addition, he has served in numerous staff positions at service and joint level.

LTG Clarke served with the 75th Ranger Regiment as a company and battalion commander. He also commanded the regiment from 2007-2009. He also served as operations officer for the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). He has a strong background in airborne and infantry divisions as well. He is currently serving as Director for Strategic Plans and Policy, J5, Joint Staff at the Pentagon. He has deployed on numerous tours overseas in conflicts to include Desert Shield / Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from West Point and a Master of Business Administration from Benedictine College. He is also a graduate of the National War College with a Master’s degree in Security and Strategic Studies.

Jim Nicholson Receives the Hiring Our Heroes Presidential Award

8th Annual Lee Anderson Hiring Our Heroes Awards Gala, presented by USAA, on November 14, 2018 presented the Hiring Our Heroes Presidential Award to the Honorable R. Jim Nicholson for a lifetime of commitment and service to veterans and military families. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, Nicholson's reputation of caring for those in need spans decades public and private service dedicated to our country as well as our service members and their families.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is in recognition of Nicholson's sustained support of our nation's veterans and military families. As U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, and significantly, as secretary of Veterans Affairs, both in the George W. Bush administration, Nicholson has always been keenly aware of the hardships and sacrifices made by America's service members and their families and is committed to helping them.

The Hiring Our Heroes program, which he co-founded, facilitates the hiring of veterans and military spouses by private industry. The program has helped more than 30,000 veterans and military spouses find jobs.

"The best thing the private sector can do for veterans is to hire them," said Nicholson. "There is nothing more fulfilling than being able to take care of yourself and your family. And, it's a great opportunity for employers: young veterans are all volunteers who are self-disciplined, mission-focused, have an excellent esprit de corps, and offer many valuable tangible and intangible skills."

Army Breaks Ground for Anderson Athletic Center

Army West Point Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan has announced that construction is set to begin on the Anderson Athletic Center, which will be the new state-of-the-art home for the Black Knights' sprint football, softball and volleyball teams.

"We have an incredible opportunity to offer top-level support for many of our cadet-athletes thanks to the Anderson Athletic Center," said Corrigan. "Lee and Penny Anderson have been transformational for the Academy and the Athletic Department. Not only have the Anderson's been instrumental in developing our men's and women's rugby programs, but have endowed head coaching positions and contributed their time and mentorship. The building timeline would not have been met without the significant support of Bill Sandbrook, John and Ellen Drew, and Bill and Diane Spurgeon and the Class of 1981."

Peter Gleichenhaus, on 27 Feb, was awarded the Jewish Community Relations Council Distinguished Leadership Award for his being a Veteran and community leader during their event at the San Francisco War Memorial Veterans Building.

Pete was noted for his tremendous community service in leading JCRC’s Hiring Our Heroes project to match returning veterans with jobs, and for enhancing Jewish life in the Bay Area and beyond.

Over the years, the tournament has been held at a number of great venues. First year at Hilton Head; followed by nine years at Greenlefe, FL; two years at Callaway Gardens, GA; two at Palm Coast, FL; four at World Golf Village, St Augustine, FL; one at Amelia Island, FL; three at the Robert Trent Jones Capitol Hill course at, Prattville, AL; two at the RTJ Grand National course in Opelika, AL; two at Innisbrook, FL; and 2015-16 at Grand National, Opelika, AL. For 2018, we return for another year to World Golf Village and the Renaissance World Village Resort in St Augustine.

These are all great golf courses, but this tournament is all about fun and camaraderie. It is a chance to see and visit with classmates and comrades from other classes. Many extended family members also come adding to the diversity of the group. There is ample opportunity to relax and visit. Players at every level participate in the event. Golf expertise is not a requirement for having fun and in fact may be the exception for those that attend. Having a good time is a requirement.

Group Enjoying June 2017 Cruise to Norway

A few of us are on a Viking Ocean cruise up along the coast of Norway, across the Arctic Ocean to the Shetlands, Orkneys, Edinburgh, and London.

Here we are in Molde, Norway. Lots of scenery.

We have Mike & Chan Eiland, Terry & Jeanne Kirkpatrick, Gene Witherspoon, John & Teri Grisoni in our '61 group.

This was a Viking Ocean cruise from Bergen, Norway to London. We departed Bergen on 25 June to sail up along the coast of Norway visiting some of the great fjords and towns. Right now we crossed the Arctic Circle as we head up to the northernmost part of Norway. Then we will head for the U.K. and visit the Shetlands, the Orkneys, Edinburgh , and then finish in London. Today, Mike Eiland, Gene Witherspoon, and I paid homage to King Neptune for permission to cross over the Arctic Circle. It entailed diving into icy water, kissing the Royal Salmon, downing an aquavit, an having our noses painted blue. You have to do what you have to do.

Mike Eggleston ’61 Releases Newest Book "One Man’s Traitor is Another’s Patriot"

Mike Eggleston releases One Man's Traitor is Another's Patriot.

This history tells the story of George Washington and Robert Rogers and the conflict between the two. Robert Rogers is considered by many to be the father of the U. S. Army Special Forces and Rangers. Rogers’ Saint Francis Raid in 1759 against the Abenaki tribe of Native Americans in what is now Canada was one of the major events of that war. The raid is described in detail. This book provides a large level of detail and reveals a vast number of contemporary documents that are frequently quoted. During the War of Independence, he and Washington clashed and Washington thought he was a British spy. In the battles that followed the Declaration of Independence Rogers ‘activities were of continuing concern to Washington. Robert Rogers was a puzzle to his contemporaries and to those who study his life today. This book describes Rogers’ life and motivations.

Army Names Al Vanderbush '61 Honorary Coach Football Spring Game

Head coach Jeff Monken and the Army West Point football team has announced their honorary captains and coach for the upcoming Spring Game on Saturday at Michie Stadium.

The honorary coach for the team is former player and Director of Athletics Al Vanderbush '61.

The captains include Adrian Calame '96, Steve Chaloult '92, Rob Dickerson '87, Mike Gann '10, Hise Gibson '97, Rob Healy '86, Frank Scappaticci '09, and Don Smith '86.

"Army West Point Football has a history all its own," Monken said. "Each spring, we are incredibly proud to welcome a group of former players back to the Black and Gold Spring Game to serve as honorary captains. The legacy of the Army Football Brotherhood extends across decades and through generations of championship teams. When our team takes the field of friendly strife, we represent a long line of Black Knights who have battled on the Banks of the Hudson and we are excited to have this group of men with us this year."

The team will honor the captains and Vanderbush prior to the game on Saturday and the Black Knights will also have a quick ceremony for the graduating seniors prior to kickoff.

Admission is free to the game and the Black Knights are offering a host of activities prior to the game.

At 11 a.m., a free youth clinic for children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade will be led by members of the Army football team. To sign up, CLICK HERE.

Pregame activities will get underway at 11 a.m. at Gate 3 of Michie Stadium, the lone entrance into the field. Concession stands will be open before and during the contest.

Following the contest, fans can interact with the football team and capture post game autographs at Gate 1 of the stadium.

A new addition to this year's spring game activities is a special game on the gridiron between the New York City Police Department and the Philadelphia Police Department. That game will kickoff at approximately 5:30 p.m.

George Kopcsak Travels 6,000 Miles for Veterans in 2016 Run for the Wall

FRONT ROYAL – A Warren County man honored his fellow military veterans with a motorcycle ride that ended in Washington, D.C., over the weekend.

Retired U.S. Army Col. George Kopcsak, of Bentonville, and hundreds of other motorcyclists participated in the Run for the Wall – an annual trek from California to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.

'61 Company G-1's The Flying Finn (TFF) Completes 2016 Army Ten-Miler

In response to orders from Commander, Co. G-1, TFF joined some 26,000 other human beings to represent the very best company in USMA ‘61 in this year’s Army Ten-Miler. Results shown here...

Unfortunately, the oldest geezer to complete the race was 80, thus relegating TFF to probably second oldest. (A younger 7.9 decader also completed the race.)

China Welcomes Four Members of the Class of 1961 During Two Week Uniworld Tour

The four members of the Class of 1961 (and their wives) (Charlie and Karen Hansell, Mick and Coralinn Maus, Bill and Kaye Williamson and Kathy White with her sister, Virginia) shown in the photo participated in a two-week Uniworld Tour through China from 14 to 25 September.

We were all surprised at the modernization of infrastructure as well as the antiquities that were visited. We began in Shanghai and were amazed at the modern buildings and the friendliness of the Chinese people. Shanghai is where the modern interface with the western world began and some of the British and French buildings are preserved and utilized to this day.

Next stop was an upriver three-day cruise on the Yangtze River that included observation of and passage through the huge and very impressive Three Gorges Dam. The river boat was very comfortable and the food and drink were excellent.

We disembarked in Chungking and then flew on to Xi’an where the Terra Cotta Warriors have been recently discovered and partially unearthed and reassembled. This massive army, almost beyond description, is overwhelming and the archeological care being taken is astonishing. Next and final stop was Beijing.

Three days were spent visiting the national monuments in and around Beijing: the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Evening dinners followed by very impressive stage shows occurred on two of the nights.

A great time was had by all and as always. spending time together was unforgettable.

Classmates Get Together for Visit at Army Residence Community in San Antonia, TX

Gary and Button came to San Antonio for a visit, Sept 28-30, 2016. They stayed with Bob and Terry Cairns who, along with David and Mimi Brooks, Howard and Nancy DeWitt, and Phil and Sharon Mallory, live at the Army Residence Community (ARC). The guys and gals from the class had a great time and the picture records the last evening’s dinner at one of the dining rooms in the ARC. Air Force Academy Selects USMA '61 Kenneth Siegenthaler Heiser Award Winner

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Kenneth Siegenthaler from the Department of Astronautics and Col. Neal Rappaport from the Department of Economics and Geosciences won the Academy's 2010 Heiser Awards May 6.

First-class cadets selected the two instructors from more than 160 eligible senior professors based on contributions to cadets' personal and intellectual development and their demonstration of the Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do.

Senior cadets lauded Dr. Siegenthaler for placing his students first and imparting life lessons that transcend the daunting and complex course material and added that he consistently teaches with a smile. Dr Siegenthaler earned a doctorate in laser physics from the Air Force Institute of Technology. His research interests include lasers, remote sensing and small satellites.

The Heiser Award, named after Professor Emeritus Dr. William H. Heiser, is the only award selected by the graduating class. Dr. Heiser was recently elected as a 2010 honorary fellow for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics alongside former

This Year's Golfing Grads Good Time and Looking Forward to Next Year's Outing

What a great time! Beautiful weather, gorgeous golf courses, and especially being able to play from the more forward tees. Regardless of handicap, I think we all had fun playing golf. The Robert Trent Jones venues are hard to beat. As always, the outing was more about camaraderie, war stories, and shared memorable moments while chasing the little white ball.

Worthy of mention is that one Classmate, contrary to instructions, drove his golf cart into a marsh. Reports are that the cart was mired up to the hubs requiring a massive recovery operation by the staff. I have heard that this Classmate is banned from driving a cart in the future on a RTJ golf course. This story has legs, and the Classmate will remain anonymous until we can properly embellish the story for future telling.

Our class night out was highlighted by Carmen and Joyce Cavezza joining us. Carmen, Citadel 61', is a distinguished soldier who served with many of us during his illustrious career. Fun night.

Next year Golfing Grads will be held at the World Golf Village near St. Augustine on 3-5 April 2017. The dates do not conflict with Easter or the Masters. Get them on your calendar now. World Golf Village will be a great venue. It is located just off of I 95 south of Jacksonville, FL and near St. Augustine. A great hotel, excellent golf courses, plus the Golf History Museum, and a huge golf store-all on site. It may be more attractive to the ladies as St. Augustine and the I 95 corridor have much to offer. More to come on this

Hats off to John Rocco 73' for pulling this year's outing together. Thanks to Dan Baker 73' for all his hard work with scheduling and scoring. Thanks to our own Dick Clarke for helping with the contracting of this year's and future venues. A special thanks to Gary Hyde who really is the one that puts everything together and has infinite patience in dealing with multiple classes. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope that he can rejoin the team next year.

Will Conley and Bill Williamson's sons added to our class fun, and I believe they really enjoyed. We could use more sons, and golfing daughters in the future to help carry the 61' team.

Many who participate for the first time have a great experience and complain that they had not heard of Golfing Grads. Collectively, we will do a better job next year getting the word out.

Eggleston ’61 New Book Tells Story About 5th Marine Regiment in WWI Is Now Available

The story of the 5th Marine Regiment in World War I is now available, it will be published in March. More than 8,000 men served in the Fifth Marine Regiment of the U.S. Army’s Second Infantry Division during World War I and the occupation of Germany. Marine units were among the first to arrive in war-torn Europe in 1917, and sustained greater casualties than other American units. This book tells the human story of the "Devil Dogs" in World War I and the years following through the recollections of veterans recorded over the past century. The influenza epidemic that raged during the war is discussed. An annotated roster of the regiment lists each Marine, with service details provided where known.

Donations Requested to Name Defenders Lodge Room in Honor of Class of 1961

Frank Gibson is asking for donations to raise $50,000 to name a guest room at the Lee and Penny Anderson Defenders Lodge, Palo Alto, CA, in honor of the West Point Class of 1961.

Placing our Class of 1961 on a Defenders Lodge guest room will contribute to eliminating the mortgage on the building that offers a free safe haven for Veterans and their Caregivers while they undergo medical treatment at the Palo Alto VA.

16-18 April 2015 Golfing Grads of USMA 27th Annual Reunion & Golf Tournament at Grand National Golf Club

This year, the outing is 16-19 April at the Grand National Golf Course, part of the Robert Trent Jones Trail, near Opelika, AL. The complex has two 18 holes championship courses and one challenging executive par 3 course. We stay at the Marriott hotel which is on the grounds of the complex and a short distance to the club house. It is an outstanding and convenient venue.

All who have participated in the past and those who are interested, but have yet to attend, are encouraged to sign up soonest. You don't want to run the risk of the Marriott running out of available rooms. Could happen.

For '61', Golfing Grads is all about fun and camaraderie. We encourage all to bring wives, sons, daughters, friends-whoever. Minimal skill in golf is all that is needed. Many wives only participate in the social events and do other things during the day.

We always play in class foursomes primarily so we can offer constructive criticism to our classmates along with war stories. Thursday is a scramble followed by a buffet dinner at the clubhouse and often followed by a guest speaker. Friday is the two man teams, probably on the executive course. That night is a class dinner at a local restaurant. Saturday is individual play within class foursomes. Saturday night is the awards dinner at the Marriott. There is a central hospitality room which affords us the opportunity to socialize with other classes. '61' usually organizes our own hospitality suite under the direction of Gary Hyde and his helpers.

Speaking of Gary, he is the central organizational "czar" for billeting for all classes. It is important that you complete his survey soonest as Gary works directly with the Marriott to determine when you should contact the Marriott to finalize your individual reservation. In some cases, classmates are waiting to see who is participating in order to pair up as roommates. The sooner we have confirmed roomies and lock in reservations, the less likely a billeting problem. The survey also has the information that helps us determine the golfing aspect. Once the surveys are in, Bob Kewley and I will work on pairings, teams, times, and individual druthers. If this sounds a bit complicated, it beats the hell out of past years where 150-175 individuals were trying to make their own arrangements.

Let me take a little of your time and discuss where we have been over the past couple of years and what we might conclude or learn from that journey.

During the past 24 months, among many things, we have done four on-line surveys of the entire class, coordinated many times with reunion POC’s at West Point, concluded where we wanted to have the reunion, decided when we wanted to have it, communicated with hotel sales reps at some 17 potential lodging venues, conducted face-to-face meetings with the five short-list lodging venue reps, had follow-up face-to-face meetings with the three finalists for lodging and reunion HQ, and completed a final contract with the hotel chosen as base of operations for the 55th.

As you can imagine and probably observed I have learned a lot and come to many convictions about the reunion during that period. Let me recap some of my thoughts, convictions, and lessons learned here for your info and comment as you wish.

Flying Finn Finally Retires After 53 Years of Service as Cadet, Military, and Civil Service

I did not want a retirement ceremony, but in the waning days of my Joint Staff tenure my officemates prevailed and arranged one for me. Glad they did. It was fun filled, humorous, and left a very warm glow in our hearts. Gen Paxton is the Assistant Commandant, USMC. He and I have been in contact for many years via our shared interest in physical fitness. Interestingly, his undergraduate and graduate degrees are in civil engineering from Cornell University, not far from my upstate NY hometown, Spencer. Gen Paxton definitely has the "common touch"!

Budapest to Bucharest 18-28 June 2014 Passage to Eastern Europe Enjoyed By All

Seventeen Classmates plus wives family and friends just returned from the Viking river cruise from Budapest to Bucharest.

They sailed through and visited Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania! Highlights included a traditional Pusza horsemanship performance, several fortresses, shopping in town centers, dining in local restaurants---including one with a folkloric performance, sailing through the Iron Gate---a beautiful, dramatic natural wonder of spectacular narrow gorges with enormous white limestone cliffs, and several celebrations for Sandy Shapiro’s special birthday—one complete with hysterical masks that Button and Gary Hyde carried from the US!

They were on one of Vikings newest Longships----lovely, modern, comfortable.

They had a group that continued on to Istanbul and another to Transylvania.

Istanbul was quite interesting with visits to many mosques (including the very impressive Blue Mosque), cruising on the Bosphorus, visiting the Grand Bazaar and dining on very good local food.

Robert B. Rosenkranz ’61 Inducted Into the U.S. Army Force Management Hall of Fame

Maj. Gen. Robert M. (Bo) Dyess, Jr. '82 joins Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Robert B. Rosenkranz '61 following the induction of Rosenkranz into the U.S. Army Force Management Hall of Fame May 29 at the Pentagon. Rosenkranz played a major role as a U.S. Army Force Manager during a period of world-changing events and Army transition. The Hall of Fame recognizes military and civilian personnel who made significant and lasting contributions in areas such as doctrine, manning and equipping. Maj. Gen. Dyess is the Director of Force Development, G-8 and is responsible for equipping the U.S. Army and oversees the activity of all U.S. Army Force Managers.

Russell is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Carolyn; daughter Allison Alleva, her husband Quentin, and children Robert and Jonathan; son Roger Cornelius; and daughter Cecily Cornelius-White and children Avery and Evan. Russell was predeceased by both of his parents and by his brother and our Classmate, Roger Cornelius.

Visitation will be at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard, New Orleans, LA on March 17 from 9 to 11 AM with a funeral mass beginning at 11 AM. Interment in the family tomb at Lake Lawn will follow.

2015 Viking Cruise from Amsterdam to Basil 15 - 22 Sep 2015 w/Optional Tour to Arnhem

We would love for you to join us on a cruise that we have just put a group booking on. It is from Amsterdam to Basel in Sept of 2015. Great news! Also, Viking has made the final payment much more to our liking as it is not until April of 2015.

We are planning a two night, one full day optional tour to Arnhem to the WWII Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek to learn about the 1944 Battle at Arnhem. History comes alive through veteran's recordings and a large collection of artifacts. We will also stop at the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery . This is the final resting place of over 1600 men, many of them Allied soldiers who lost their lives in an effort to take the bridge at Arnhem (a story told in the film: "A Bridge Too Far ").

Hawaii '61 Cruise Bunch Enjoyed Cruise Prior to Army/Hawaii Football Game

The Hawaii '61 Cruise Bunch managed to sandwich the cruise in between some un-Hawaii-like, rotten weather. The background for this picture is Kauai's famous Na Pali coast. They had a few sprinkles that day but it didn’t deter from their fun. That was the only day that they didn’t bask in sunny weather.

Jerry and Cathy brought their son John and daughter-in-law Pam and their daughter Martha and son-in-law Brian along.

The cruise was outstanding. The various island tours were great fun. Some of the ‘troops’ got in two rounds of golf. The only downside was that one or two of them might have added a pound or two through the week.

Dave and Mimi Brooks and Bob and Terry Cairns spent an enjoyable couple of weeks in a cabin at Bellows Air Force Station, joining them for the Army-UH game.

Ron and Marilyn began their odyssey at Bellows then came aboard the Pride of America for the cruise.

Bill Tobin and his wife Chris vacationed on the Big Island with family, rendezvousing with them at the USMA tailgate party.

The Army-UH game was completely forgettable. UH fans loved it because they finally won one game to end their season. After Army's UH performance, none of the Bunch had any hope for A-N.

Michael G. Harpold '61 served in the US Border Patrol at Bakersfield, California. There he met Cesar Chavez, and Harpold's involvement with farm workers during the grape strike led to a lifelong interest in their plight. He retired in Ketchikan, Alaska at the end of his thirty-five year career where he lives with his wife, Elaine. He ventures south to visit daughters and grandchildren on the West Coast.

Through its fictional characters, Jumping the Line provides an intriguing and accurate look at an issue historically important and still debated. The author treats his characters with compassion but doesn't gloss over their mistakes. '61 Classmates Run Into Each Other at Army/Air Force Game and Enjoy Tailgating

Dick Knoblock ran into Frank Gibson (aka Gibby) at the Army/Air Force game 2Nov 13. The distinguished member of last Army undefeated team (dressed in hoodie) and his B Squad cohort were sighted crawling under tent flap at the Supe's sponsored Army/Air Force tailgate party. The pair was later seen pouring "gratis" bloody marys and scarfing down breakfast burritos. It was rumored that the duo had escaped the Pikes Peak Region AOG sponsored tailgate where permafrost welded outdoor chairs to their rear ends. Seems someone forgot to provide space heaters at the 7AM November 2nd event in Colorado - Duh!!!!

We could go on with the polite guests wondering who the hell they were and so forth. On the other hand perhaps we should just leave it as another fond memory of good times shared with '61 Classmates. Dick later hooked up with flight school mates at Jurassic Park after the game and gamely took the trash about our fourth quarter collapse - at least the wine was good.

The VA Palo Alto Health Care System cut the ribbon on 8 October 2013 to commemorate the new 52 room, 104 bed, 34,000 square foot Lee and Penny Anderson Defenders Lodge, made possible through a generous donation by Lee and Penny Anderson.

A state of the art hotel for service men and women receiving care at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital Palo Alto officially opened October 8, 2013 on the VA Palo Alto, CA campus. The gift from the PenFed (Pentagon Federal Credit Union) Foundation means that veterans can share a free room with their caregivers instead of possibly sleeping in their cars, unable to pay for a motel room.

Anderson ’61, gave recognition to “six Classmates” in attendance. The group that were seated together were Burns, Esselstein, Gleichenhaus, Granneman, and Lubke. On stage with the dignitaries was former Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Jim Nicholson.

Jack Dewar Keeps Ice Hockey Tradition Going With "Ice Holes" Sons and Grandson

Our former West Point Ice Hockey Captain, Jack Dewar, is pictured here with three of Jack's four sons (Jon, Chris and Doug, left to right in photo). They play in a North Carolina 40 & over ice hockey league and were allowed to include grandson Peter (far right). Peter having just turned 18 was allowed to skate with the 40 and over guys in the Dewar line in a recent game. Jack provided coaching and enthusiasm from the stands. Probably won't happen again as he scored a hat trick. Peter is Chris Dewar's son and also Karen & Dan Schroeder's grandson as Chris is married to their second daughter, also Chris. As pointed out, the Dewar line is named the "Ice Holes".

Army vs Hawaii Mini-reunion Planning Under Way by "Red Dog" Armstrong

Early in June, in fact on the 51st anniversary of our graduation, Al "Red Dog" Armstrong sent Dick Buckner a message proposing a class mini-reunion in Hawaii in conjunction with the Army-Hawaii football game on 30 Nov 13. Al's idea is for classmates to come to Hawaii at least a week before the game, take a cruise around the islands for a week, and dock back in Honolulu the morning of Saturday, 30 Nov. Attendees would then transit to the Hale Koa, go to the game, and then enjoy the evening in Honolulu.

Al is interested to see if enough classmates would like to attend before starting detailed planning. Here are some things to consider in making your decision:

Thanksgiving is 28 Nov 13.
This year, the cost of the cruise varies between $1,049 and $2,449 per person based on cabin location.
The cost of rooms at the Hale Koa range between $118 and $162 per night with rates subject to change on or about November 1 each year.
Classmates who are not retired military can take advantage of the Hale Koa if sponsored by a military retiree who will be staying at the hotel during the same time frame.

Al Vanderbush, III Inducted into Army Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2013

Five All-Americans, the first American to walk in space, a Heisman Trophy runner-up, an Army Athletic Association Award winner, two legendary coaches and an administrator who also contributed as a multi-sport athlete, are among the candidates selected into the Army Sports Hall of Fame. Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Boo Corrigan announced the Class of 2013 today.

The 10th induction class into the Army Sports Hall of Fame includes women’s basketball standout Julie DelGiorno, two-time football All-American selections Paul Bunker and Richard “Dick” Nowak, lacrosse coach Jack Emmer, cross country and track and field mentor Carleton Crowell, three-time soccer All-American Jose Gonzalez, football, baseball player and administrator Al Vanderbush, football, men’s basketball and lacrosse star Charles “Monk” Meyer, tight end Gary Steele and Ed White, the space walker who first starred in track and field and soccer at the Academy.

'61 Wins Team Trophy at Golfing Grads 2013

The 25th Annual Golfing Grads was held this year 17-21 April at Innisbrook Resort near Tampa,FL. Over a 160 golfers representing classes from 1961 to 1983 participated in 3 1/2 days of golf and camaraderie.

Our class was represented by 30 Classmates, sons, brother, and guest. One of the highlights of the outing was Ron Hannon and son Mark '89 delivering the oldest and youngest grad's talks. They made us proud! The talk by Mike Sullivan '89, the offensive coordinator for the Tampa bay Buccaneers was excellent.

Mostly it was about golf and friendship. '61 is particularly proud to win the team trophy as it is the 25th Anniversary trophy and honored Dan Willson, Sr. '63 who worked tirelessly over the years to ensure the success of Golfing Grads.

The fact that we were the oldest class participating made winning all the more enjoyable. '61 participants were: Tom Baird, Bob Cairns, Chuck Chamberlin-associate from Texas A&M, Dick Clarke and brother Dennis, Jim Connolly, Todd Counts, Joe Fishburne, Bob Glass, Bill Griffiths, Ron Hannon and son Mark '89', Jay Hartford, Hamp Hodges, Gary Hyde, Bob Kewley, Jim Looram, Phil Mallory, Lou Murray-guest of class, Don Sawtelle, Dale Shipley and son Don, Bill Tobin, Paul Vallely, Jack Veatch, Jerry White, Bill Williamson and sons Scott and Tim, and Gene Witherspoon.

Golfing Grads returns to Innisbrook 24-27 April 2014. We hope more Classmates will join us. In the meantime, '61 we are the Champs!

Son of '61 Tony Hale of 'Veep' wins Emmy for Best Supporting Comedy Actor

Mike and Rita Hale's son Tony won an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at 2013 Emmy Award show.

Tony Hale won the Emmy for his role as Gary Walsh on the HBO show "Veep," marking his first win and nomination. Tony is also known for his role as Buster Bluth on the cult comedy series "Arrested Development," which aired on television between 2003 and 2006 and made a comeback on Netflix earlier this year.

WPAOG Announces Lee Anderson as 2013 Distinguished Graduate Award Recipient

The Distinguished Graduate Award is given to graduates of the United States Military Academy whose character, distinguished service, and stature draw wholesome comparison to the qualities for which West Point strives, in keeping with its motto: "Duty, Honor, Country." Our Classmate Lee Anderson has been anounced as a 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Graduate Award.

Over the course of four decades, Anderson turned APi into a Forbes Top 400 company now operating at over 160 locations in all 50 states, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Most often a Silver Anniversary is marked by major celebration; however this year’s milestone event is bittersweet due to the untimely passing of Dan Willson (USMA ’63). “The Dipper” worked tirelessly all year long planning this event so the Long Gray Line golfers would have a place to reunite, reminisce and play golf. Before he left us, he negotiated a two-year contract with Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida. His son, Danny Jr., which most of you already know, has been enlisted to organize the remaining details. Let’s encourage everyone who has ever attended this event to return for a grand celebration and tribute to Dan Willson.

The Team Captain for the Class of 1961 this upcoming year is Jerry White. I-2 Classmates Invade Balboa Island, CA for Successful 2012 Mini-reunion

Thanks to the outstanding effort of Marilyn and Chuck Randolph, a great time was had by all of the I-2 files who attended the mini-reunion at Balboa Island, California from 11-14 October 2012. I-2 mini Reunions started back in May 2000 at Williamsburg, VA and were followed by reunions in May 2005 at Eagle Lake Wisconsin, in April 2008 at Huntsville, Alabama, and in September 2009 at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Mini-Reunion Another Success

The Goldbug Island pictures are from the dinner on Wednesday evening. The dinner had a Edgar Allen Poe theme. The dinner was peel and eat shrimp, crabcakes, fried chicken, Charleston Red Rice, roasted vegetables, sweetpotatoe biscuits and cornbread rolls. Goldbug Island sits on the inland waterway. The weather was gorgeous.

There was a Charleston harbor cruise on the Palmetto Breeze, a 50' catamaran. They left Shem Creek at 1700 and returned at 1900 hrs. Saw some dolphin playing in the water, went by Ft. Sumter, and the Charleston battery.

Joe Fishburne led a walking tour of the old wall city area of Charleston on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. They saw the Powder Magazine, Dock Street Theater, St. Michaels Church and the Exchange Building where customs tarriffs were levied in colonial times.

16-28 September 2012 Mini-Reunion Russian River Cruise Outstanding Success

Day 1. Seventeen Classmates and wives plus twenty-four family and friends boarded Viking Truvor in Moscow, Russia.

Day 2. Bright and early the next morning we boarded buses for the City Tour of Moscow, a ride on their highly decorated and very efficient Metro(constructed in 1932) and concluded with a visit to Red Square. We passed the famed Bolshoi Theater and marveled at the beauty of St Basil’s Cathedral (the oldest building in the square). Many classmates marveled that this was surreal standing in Red Square when only 20 years ago it didn’t seem ever possible.

The 2012 Golfing Grads is 19-22 April at the Robert Trent Jones complex in Auburn/Opelika, AL. This is perhaps the nicest venue they have enjoyed in 25 years of golfing grads, so if you can make it, you will enjoy.

So far six of the Class of `96` have registered at the Marriott Hotel. If you are going to participate, call or e-mail the Marriott and also email Jerry White at lwhite7314@aol.com as he needs requested info to organize scoring, flights etc.

If you are attending and have a roommate, let the hotel and Jerry know. As we get closer, we will pair up Classmates needing a roommate.

Jerr6y would appreciate you letting him know your status, so he can keep Dan Willson informed, line up roommates, and develop the ‘61 teams for each day which it is hoped Bob Kewley will take over as in the past.

Bill Mackie Recognized as Oldest Human Being on the Joint Staff by GEN Dempsey

Bill Mackie on 3 March 2012 had the honor of meeting the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin E. Dempsey for a "Photo Op" in conjunction with another ceremony. Among other things, Bill was being recognized as the Oldest Human Being on the Joint Staff. It is reported that Bill told GEN Dempsey about his pride in serving on the Joint Staff with young officers such as GEN Dempsey. We - our country - is indeed lucky to have GEN Dempsey as our Nation's top military officer, Bill added.

GEN Dempsey and Bill lamented the fact that it has been over eleven years since Army beat Navy in football. All-in-all, a good day.

75 Classmates, Spouses, Friends Attend Orlando 25-30 January 2012 Mini-Reunion

Gary and Button Hyde hosted the Orlando Mini-Reunion 25-30 January 2012. Other than some showers on Friday, the weather was as advertised by the Orlando Chamber of Commerce – unseasonably warm days with cool, but comfortable, evenings. Seventy-five classmates, spouses, and friends attended.

To show the great appreciation of the Class of 1961 for hosting class functions throughout Gary’s military career and the many Orlando mini-reunions, Dick Buckner and Ed Brown presented Gary and Button a framed canvas of Marching into the Future by Seung-Mee Yoo on behalf of the entire Class of 1961.

It is with great regret and sorrow that we must notify you of the death of our Classmate, Bob Frix, on 15 December in Sequim, WA, after a long and courageous battle with many health problems, principally as a result of a fall in 2005.

Bob is survived by his wife, Moe; sister, Joanna and her husband, Dr. Andrew Burgess of Texas; daughter Michele; son Alex and daughter-in-law, Kathryn.

Funeral services for Bob Frix will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 11:00am.

It is with great regret and sorrow that we must notify you of the death of our Classmate, Connie Leinbach, on 12 November in Nashville, TN after a courageous battle with a brain tumor. Connie, a native of Pennsylvania, spent Plebe Year in Company I-2 and was among a group of Yearlings who were transferred to B-2 at the end of summer training at Camp Buckner.

Connie is survived by his wife, Sharon; sons Marc, Chris, and Dane; and daughters Grace and Kira.

Connie's funeral service will be at 1:00 PM at the Old Post Chapel, Fort Myer, VA on Friday, March 2, 2012 followed by inurnment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Please allow extra time to obtain entrance to Fort Myer. A picture identification document (driver's license or passport) for civilians is required. For active duty and retired military personnel, a valid ID card may be used. Inform the gate guard you are attending Connie Leinbach's funeral.

B-1 Classmates Hold Successful Reunion
12-17 Oct 2011 in White Sulphur Springs, WV

A wonderful B-1 reunion was hosted by Roger and LewAnne Cerasoli at their home at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WV. Guests began arriving on 12 October 2011 and most had departed by the 17^th. George & Michele Kopcsak arrived on the morning of the 13^th. It happened to be George’s birthday so he got to cut the Reunion cake that night. John Lischak arrived on the afternoon of the 13^th. The Gibson’s arrived on the 14^th. Everybody else arrived on the 12^th.

The Cerasoli’s opened their home to all of them. They were able to accommodate all but three couples in their beautiful home. George & Michele, Frank & Barbara, and John & Kay were housed in a fabulous guest cottage near the Sporting Club Lodge. The attendees were: Roger & LewAnne Cerasoli, Bill & Jane Doherty, Rusty & Donna Dyer, Bill & Linda Esselstein, Frank & Barbara Gibson, Gene & Sharon Goodell, Bill Griffiths, George & Michele Kopcsak, John Lischak & Kay White, Jay & Linda McCann, Don & Jo Sawtelle, and Cy Shearer.

ASCE Society Award Recognizes Daniel Halpin for Scholarship in Construction

The American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) proudly announces establishment of the Daniel W. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction, named in honor of the world-renowned expert on the use of simulation in studying construction processes. Nominations are invited for the inaugural presentation. This award is open to members of ASCE or the Construction Institute who have attained a doctoral degree within the last ten years and who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship that advances construction engineering as a science. The award consists of a certificate, a cash prize and the opportunity to present the Daniel W. Halpin Address at a meeting of the ASCE.

Daniel W. Halpin, professor emeritus and retired Bowen Head of the Division of Construction Engineering and Management at Purdue University, is a 1961 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and received the MSCE and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1969 and 1973. He is the developer of the CYCLONE simulation system, which is used to simulate and study construction processes. The system is used worldwide by construction researchers and educators. His contributions have led to construction simulation becoming an essential part of university construction engineering curricula. He was elected by ASCE to Distinguished Membership (Dist.M.ASCE) in 2006.

Prior to taking the position as Head of the Division of Construction Engineering and Management at Purdue, he was a member of the Civil Engineering faculty at Georgia Tech and the Clark Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the U. of Maryland. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich , and the University of Sydney in Australia.

His basic textbook, Construction Management, published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc. has been one of the two or three dominant texts introducing engineering students to the concepts of construction engineering over the past 25 years. He has authored or co-authored 11 books. Various editions of these texts have been translated into Chinese, German, Portuguese and Spanish.

Planning Detailed for 17-21 October 2011 Golfing Mini-Reunion In Greenville, SC

Georgia and Gene Witherspoon are now busy fleshing out the details for the mini-reunion scheduled from Monday, 17 October to Friday, 21 October, 2011 in Greenville, SC. When Gene was growing up in SC, Greenville was a tough textile mill town. Since then, there has been an amazing transformation that has made this city one of the most desirable places to live in the United States. If you haven't been to Greenville lately, you will be pleased to find an inviting downtown with tree-shaded sidewalks lined with shops, pubs, restaurants and nearby parks, gardens, water falls and other attractions. Residents and visitors of all ages can be found strolling at all hours of the day and evenings to take advantage of these and other attractions such as live outdoor music that sometimes even we of a more advanced age can recognize. Gene has locked in a block of rooms in a hotel on the north end of Greenville's Main Street with easy access to all of these attractions. Although golfers will have the opportunity for rounds on three different courses on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, there will be plenty of activities for non-golfers and those who choose not to play all three rounds. Everyone will participate in four evening dinner socials -- two in downtown Greenville and two at the Witherspoon's home in Montebello just north of Greenville. Here is a list of the non-golfing options that are being planned:

Walking tour of Greenville.
Guided tours of Greenville Art Museum (outstanding Wyeth, Jasper Johns and other collections) and SC Upstate History Museum (Georgia is on the Board and will arrange tour).
Visit to Flat Rock, NC hosted by residents Dutch and Gail Coulter. Includes visit to Carl Sandberg property, lunch at Coulters home, and matinee performance of the "Buddy Holly Story" at the Flat Rock Playhouse.
Field trip to Caesars Head State Park and its magnificent view of Smoky Mountains with leaves in full color.
Bike excursion of the Swamp Rabbit Trail north of Greenville which will include tour of Furman University campus and lunch at Travelers Rest.
Field trip to Asheville, NC for one or both of two events
(1) Morning tour of Biltmore estate -- (lunch in Asheville)
(2) Zany afternoon city bus tour called Lazoom (we will try to reserve the bus for a special tour -- prepare to laugh till it hurts!)
Hang out in the large hospitality suite and trade war stories!

Mike was inurned at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific – Punchbowl on September 30th.
