Bren Battle reached out to Sam's wife Pauline. She called him back. Sam was in excellent health, and exercised and
jogged regularly. He was carrying in the groceries one day, and just fell over and died. He had a recent "blip" on a stress
test, but checked out clean on the follow up exams.
Pauline met Sam while he was in Germany with the Army and she was a school teacher in the American schools. They had been
married for 38 years and have a daughter, age 34, a son, age 30, and two grandchildren. Sam did some teaching, but went into
school administration. He retired in 1997 as an assistant school superintendent in Oregon, and they moved to the San Diego area.
Sam stayed involved with several foundations involving education.
Pauline did not know much about Sam's cadet life. Bren assured her that he was very well liked and was an excellent cadet.
She said that she never knew anyone who did not like Sam.
